Terms & Conditions

1. Agreement to Terms

By accessing or using the website, newsletter, online community, membership program, or any events or services offered by The Well Read Book Club LLC ("TWRBC," "we," "us," or "our"), you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please do not access or use our services.

2. About The Well Read Book Club

The Well Read Book Club is a Chicago based book club offering in person Events, a paid membership program called The Editors, an online community hosted on the Fable platform, and a newsletter hosted on Substack. Our philosophy is simple: if you read, you're well read.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years of age to access our services or attend our events. By using our services, you confirm that you meet this requirement.

4. Events and Registration

4.1 Event Tickets

Some TWRBC Events require registration or a ticket purchase, which may be processed through a third party platform (such as Acuity Scheduling or a similar service). Payment is handled by those platforms' secure processors. TWRBC does not store or retain payment information.

4.2 Cancellation and Refund Policy

All event ticket sales are final. TWRBC does not offer refunds for event registrations once purchased, regardless of when a cancellation request is made.

4.3 Event Cancellations by TWRBC

We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule an event due to circumstances beyond our control, including but not limited to inclement weather, venue issues, or low attendance. In the event of a cancellation by TWRBC, registered attendees will receive a full refund or the option to transfer their registration to a future event.

4.4 Conduct at Events

All attendees are expected to treat fellow members, guests, and hosts with respect. TWRBC reserves the right to remove any attendee whose behavior is disruptive, abusive, or harmful to others. No refund will be issued in cases of removal for conduct violations.

4.5 Alcohol at Events

Some TWRBC Events include alcoholic beverages provided as part of the event experience. You must be 21 years of age or older to consume alcohol at any TWRBC event, regardless of the general eligibility age stated elsewhere in these Terms. We reserve the right to request valid identification and to refuse alcohol service to anyone who cannot confirm they are 21 or older, or who appears intoxicated.

By choosing to consume alcohol at a TWRBC event, you do so voluntarily and at your own risk. TWRBC is not responsible for any injury, harm, loss, or damages resulting from an attendee's consumption of alcohol, including impaired judgment, accidents, or actions taken while under the influence. Attendees are strongly encouraged to arrange safe transportation home.

TWRBC reserves the right to remove any attendee from an event, without refund, for alcohol related conduct that is disruptive, unsafe, or that otherwise violates these Terms.

4.6 Physical Activity and Fitness Classes

Some TWRBC Events may include fitness or movement based activities. By participating, you confirm that you are physically able to take part and that you have consulted a physician regarding any health condition, injury, or concern that could affect your ability to safely participate. TWRBC and its instructors are not providing medical advice, and any fitness class offered is for general recreational purposes only.

You understand that physical activity carries inherent risks, including but not limited to muscle strain, sprains, falls, and other injury, and you voluntarily assume these risks by choosing to participate. To the fullest extent permitted by law, you release The Well Read Book Club LLC, its founders, instructors, employees, and venue partners from any claims, liability, or damages arising from your participation in a fitness class or physical activity, except where caused by gross negligence or willful misconduct.

TWRBC reserves the right to modify activities, ask a participant to stop or sit out, or refuse participation to anyone who appears unable to safely take part.

5. The Editors Membership

5.1 Membership Tiers

The Editors is TWRBC's paid membership program, built around access to Editors Meetups. Membership is offered on a free tier, a monthly paid tier, and an annual paid tier, with current pricing always listed on our Substack page at checkout.

5.2 Billing, Renewal, and Cancellation

Paid Editors memberships are billed, processed, and managed through Substack, and are subject to Substack's own terms of service and billing policies. Membership automatically renews at the then current rate until canceled. You can update your payment method or cancel your membership at any time through your Substack account settings.

5.3 Editors Meetups

Editors Meetups are smaller, lower production gatherings offered exclusively to paid Editors members, held in between our regular Events. Meetup details, dates, and locations are shared directly with members in advance.

6. Online Community (Fable)

TWRBC hosts an online community through the Fable platform, where the monthly Well Read Book Pick is discussed. Use of the Fable platform is subject to Fable's own terms of service and privacy policy in addition to these Terms. Within the TWRBC community space, members are expected to engage respectfully and constructively. TWRBC reserves the right to remove members from the community for violations of our community standards.

7. Newsletter and Substack

TWRBC's newsletter and ongoing communications, including content for both free subscribers and paid Editors members, are hosted on Substack. By subscribing, you agree to receive periodic emails about upcoming events, book selections, membership content, and club news. You may unsubscribe from free content or manage your paid membership at any time through your Substack account. Your information is processed according to Substack's privacy policy.

8. Merchandise

TWRBC offers branded merchandise for purchase through our website. All sales are subject to the following:

  • All merchandise sales are final unless the item arrives damaged or defective.

  • If you receive a damaged or defective item, please contact us within 7 days of delivery with a photo of the issue, and we will arrange a replacement or refund.

  • Shipping timelines are estimates and may vary. TWRBC is not responsible for delays caused by third party carriers.

  • By placing an order, you confirm that the shipping information you provide is accurate. TWRBC is not responsible for orders lost or undeliverable due to incorrect information.

9. User Conduct

When using any TWRBC service, platform, or attending any event, you agree to:

  • Provide accurate and complete information

  • Treat all members, attendees, and TWRBC staff with respect

  • Not engage in unlawful, abusive, harassing, or disruptive behavior

  • Not use TWRBC content or materials without prior written permission

We reserve the right to refuse service or access to anyone who violates these Terms, including canceling a paid membership without refund in cases of serious or repeated violations.

10. Intellectual Property

All content associated with The Well Read Book Club, including but not limited to the name, logo, website content, social media content, newsletter copy, and event materials, is the intellectual property of The Well Read Book Club LLC or used with permission. You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, or modify our content without prior written consent.

11. Third Party Platforms and Links

Our website and communications may contain links to or integrations with third party platforms, including Fable, Substack, Acuity Scheduling, and social media channels. We are not responsible for the content, policies, or practices of these external platforms. We encourage you to review their terms and privacy policies independently.

12. Disclaimer of Warranties

TWRBC services are provided "as is" and "as available." We do not guarantee that our website, events, membership, or community will be uninterrupted, error free, or meet your expectations. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied.

13. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Well Read Book Club LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of or participation in our services, events, membership, or community.

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless The Well Read Book Club LLC, its founders, employees, contractors, and affiliates from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of our services or your violation of these Terms.

15. Modifications to These Terms

We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms at any time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Your continued use of our services after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.

16. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
